Do you spare a thought for the data you consign to oblivion every
time you empty the trashcan on your desktop? Do you pause to
reflect on the transience of life as you pass the tomb of the
Unknown Web Page with that sad phrase "404 Not Found"?

No? Then you have fallen into the spiritual void of the electronic
age and Shokyo Ishiko, the head priest of the Daioh temple in
Kyoto, Japan would like to hear from you. He has instituted a
Service for Lost Information, held every 24 October at the Daioh
temple, and has constructed a virtual temple. Visitors are invited
to send in prayer requests for data they want commemorated.
There were several thousand requests in the most recent service
last October. You can also ask the Daioh temple to construct a
memorial to your data on the temple grounds in Kyoto, or buy a
silk omamori charm for $50.
