Talk in the "Y2K community" seems to be heating up as we approach the critical August 22nd "GPS calendar rollover" date this weekend.

While completely unrelated to Y2K (it's a pure coincidence that the 1024th week of GPS existance should fall this year), it's been seized on by the shills as proof of all the horrible things that can go wrong with technology, and of how precarious our situation is.

They're all looking forward to saying "I told you so" next Monday.

Anybody want to be on how many planes fall out of the skies because of faulty GPS receivers? (note: GPS is not approved as sole means of navigation by the FAA) Or how many ships go off course and cause massive oil slicks? Or how many Boy Scout troops get eaten by bears because their handheld GPS units led them astray?

This pilot's bet: Zero. In fact, I'll probably be in my airplane, with a portable GPS unit going during the rollover. In case of a failure, I'll do what I always do. Follow the freeways!

Not that this will change anybody's minds, of course. They'll claim there was a coverup.
