WMT just won't stop. I think we'll be over 50 after options expiration.

Wal-Mart gears for more expansion - WSJ

NEW YORK, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, is combining some of its international and domestic operations in a move that could cut operating costs overseas and position it for greater expansion abroad, the Wall Street Journal reported in Thursday's online edition.

The paper said some of the operations to be combined include merchandise buying, new store planning and marketing.

It quoted Wal-Mart spokesman Jay Allen as saying some assignments will be moved from the company's Bentonville, Ark. headquarters to the foreign countries where the stores are located.

Under the new arrangement Wal-Mart aims to centralise purchasing for all its stores worldwide rather than basing merchandising in each country as happens now, the paper said.

It said the moves should greatly strengthen Wal-Mart's clout with suppliers.

''There are economies of scale all the way around. We want to make sure we're getting the best deal,'' Allen told the paper.

Citing the company, the Journal said personnel changes will involve the 400 employees in Wal-Mart's International Support Division in Bentonville. But the company expects the changes to result in ''zero to minimal'' job losses, the paper said.
