No, Joan, I articulated two scenarios: that of the gardener, and that of the polluter, and merely raised the question of which "pole", overall, human activity has been closer to....I do not know enough about the specific project you refer to, and I am happy to take your word on it. But tell me, how many projects of such hubris do you know of? How many large projects, such as the cutting of the Erie Canal or the building of the Hoover Dam, have been benign? How often does human destruction of the "ecosystem" equal the destructive power of typhoons, hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, earthquake, naturally occurring forest fires (from lightning), volcanoes, tsunamis, and such? Anyway, I am mainly interested in the initial presumption: is nature fragile or resilient? Obviously, even a robust nature might be harmed by grandiosity, and therefore it does not address the point.... |
