Cheryl,
<An analogy would be that the roads and highways have all had their
earthquake reinforcements, but it would be tough to guarantee that every driveway has been reinforced.>

The "earthquake" analogy has been also used by our government ... prepare for 3-days ... like you would for a winter storm, hurricane or earthquake.

In light of what's gone on with Turkey, and their earthquake ... I expect that analogy won't be used as frequently anymore.

My analogy was to compare the internet backbone to the "roads and highways" and individual enterprise routers as the "driveways". Just because I mention "earthquake reinforcements" doesn't really make it a legitimate argument to draw the parallel to the turkish earthquake and thus dismiss what I said. We were talking about the Internet, not emergency supply preparation, utilities, or supply chain management. These are a different conversation.

You're doing everything right. But, is the customer following Cisco's recommendations on a timely basis? Supply chain? Telecomms? Utilities? Who knows? I don't. I hope they are.

When push comes to shove, none of us will know how this turns out ... until after the first of the year. Too many unknown variables.

I agree that nobody really knows what will happen until 1/1/2000 actually gets here, but I suspect that the hardware and software vendors have a much better view into what their customers have actually done and are doing than the Y2K analysts and that is why there is a lot less panic in the industry than the experts would suggest is appropriate.
