The news of the Sprint deal brought my attention. I've been trying to assemble an understanding of the key new markets for enabling cell phones and PDA's to become internet devices. I think we shall see explosive growth in this market.

I believe the use of buddy lists and Short Message Service will be a very useful tool and the company to provide it will be a winner. Maybe this announcement with Sprint is something special?

It is interesting to see the rapid adoption of the WAP forum standard by nearly all companies in the cell phone market. WAP sets a standard by which devices of limited function can become useful internet tools. We've also seen 3Com adopt it for their Palm Pilot and Microsoft joined as well. It looks like a certain standard and we should see all new cell phones shipped next year being WAP enabled.

What I have not been able to determine yet is whether Software.com is falling into the standards world of WAP? Most of these cell phones will have specialty micro-browsers and they will have e-mail functions. I am wondering exactly how this fits with what SWCM is doing. So much to learn.

Anyway, I've started a thread called "Access Anywhere, Anytime. Cell Phones/PDA's join the Net". I would really appreciate any advice on how this end of Software.com's business may unfold.

By the way, I did a chart comparison of swcm and phcm, and found they have moved very much in step on a 100 day basis. PHCM is Phone.com, again a recent IPO and the company behind the WAP forum and a leading supplier of software on the server side for delivering data to cell phones as well as a major player in the micro-browser market.

Regards,

Mark
