The Network Is The Computer
In plain English, "the network now stretches from the data center all the way to smart cards, palmtop computers, Web phones---and probably some devices that don't have names yet (like MAJC). Imagine a world where all your devices---computers, cars, televisions, kitchen appliances---speak to each other over a network that goes wherever you do. Imagine being able to access your personal desktop from any computer---just by swiping a smart card at an airport kiosk, a hotel set-top box, or a client's workstation---anywhere you happen to be. So we won't need to carry our computers with us---the network will be everywhere we go. And it's closer that you might think."
