FranQ, I understand about IOS. When NTAP sells a filer they are selling some hardware and an ONTAP software license.

To be clear--you cannot run your own code on IOS nor on ONTAP. IOS and ONTAP are "closed", proprietary code supporting "open" standards (TCP/IP--NFS/CIFS).

NTAP is also a software company that uses their ONTAP software to leverage their hardware sales. I hope that I have been clear that ONTAP is NOT a hardware company.

So, to be argumentative for the sake of learning and shaping concept, what is the difference between CSCO and NTAP besides respective market shares.

It is becoming clearer to me that what we have RIGHT NOW are two Gorilla candidates--NTAP and EMC--entering a tornado. I believe that one will reduce the other to a chimp and one will emerge as the Gorilla. This is not dissimilar to the situation just 6-8 years ago when CSCO, Synoptics, Cabletron, 3-Com entered the tornadic phase of network implementation.

What had not been clear to me was whether either EMC or NTAP or the storage subsystem market in general was a place that a Gorilla could mature. Now that I think about CSCO's evolution, it is becoming more clear that it is a market with conditions that can support a Gorilla and that both EMC and NTAP have the products and philosophies to contend for Gorilladom. Growth numbers and market conditions show me that the tornado has begun.
