For one thing, I know that Bell Labs/Lucent have been involved in a couple of cases against MCI/WorldCom asserting that MCI/WorldCom infringed Bell Labs/Lucent patents. It doesn't help customer relations to be suing your customer for patent infringement.

Also, though it is obviously ancient history, Lucent is a product of the Bell System, and companies like MCI WorldCom will, IMO, always have a certain wariness working with Lucent. There's a presumption that when push-comes-to-shove Lucent will take sides with AT&T, its sibling and biggest customer.
