We (my 3 boys and I)just spent 10 days in Kaua'i and it wasn't enough time! Four nights just won't do it unless you're looking for night life. I didn't see a lot of it on Kaua'i. It's very laid back and absolutely gorgeous. Poipu is about as far west as you want to go. Not only is it very dry on the west side, it means you have to drive south and east around the island to get anywhere (admittedly not a very long drive). Princeville, to the north, it about a 35 minute drive to Lihue, just to give you an idea of driving times. We stayed in Lihue and it was a very nice and central location. We stayed 3 nights at the Outrigger (nice place); some other people we know stayed at the Coconut Grove 2 miles up the road. There's a Holiday Inn in that area, too. We found that we didn't spend a lot of time in our room. If the bed and breakfast really does include a hearty breakfast, you might want to consider it. Food costs on Kaua'i are very high, probably our biggest expense. Gas is $1.85 a gallon, but we used the car every day to go and spend time on different beaches. Tours are very pricey. It's worth searching for some coupons on the net.
