Your thinking is right,,, you've got to remember, however, that GREAT ideas come to many,,, (bad ones, you get exclusively).
1. The idea of cities having evolved around social and industrial needs is evident.
2. Communications (particularly telepresence/Internet) would seem to make it possible for people to ditch the grimy dirty city...
However --- before we all move to the woods, consider that, as our bandwidth increases, the depth of our communications seems to decrease.
