Free, as in absolutely free? It never existed. No society is absolutely free- but the person or entities coercing you vary. Me, I think I prefer the impersonal coercion of the government (our government) to the very personal coercion of the happy villagers of almost any city, or town. I want to be protected from my neighbors, more than I want to keep my tax dollars. That fending for yourself stuff? Only works if people are able to do that. Some people aren't. And some of those people who aren't, GOT that way because of their families, so they have no one to help them.

I don't like welfare, but your "ideas" aren't really ideas. I don't know what you think the people who really need social security and welfare ought to do? Would you just leave them to "fend for themselves" whatever that meant? Would you allow children to starve because their parents were unable or unwilling to work? Would you allow old people who had neglected to save a dime- relying on social security to be there for them- to lose their homes and watch them join the ranks of the homeless?

I don't like paying taxes- but what, EXACTLY, are your alternatives? And please, don't tell us private charities can pick up all the slack.
