You got it.

I don't defend COBOL as a "great language of today", but rather as a great language of yesterday. And it WAS great in an earlier time -- when the alternatives were FORTRAN and ALC (later on, PL/I).

As to Rod, I discount a great deal of what he says, as I think he picks up on tidbits of lingo without any true understanding of the subject matter. I noticed in one post he made authoritative-sounding remarks on a subject I had not heard anything about; the next day, I discovered a news article with the same comments in it, then declared it to be a huge new development. It was as though he read the news article and thus was an instant authority. The subject was never mentioned again. You know, you hate to waste time writing a well-thought-out post to Rod; but then you can't get to him to just knock him around a little, either, and you really feel the need to do SOMETHING, you know?

I think every newgroup has its Rods.....
