Actually, I have the level 2 service offered by Bell Atlantic. My experience has been mostly positive. I do not use AOL but it was clear in the literature sent by BellAtlantic that AOL was offered. It was said right up front and there were directions on how to set it up etc.
I find the download speeds vary, similar to what I have heard from friends with cable modems. I have, at times, come very close to the 1.6 figure.
The other important feature is that there was no additional installation of phone wires required. Since most folks have phone wires running all over their homes, with cable only going to the TV room, DSL was a much easier install. It was clear from talking to the Bell Atlantic folks that demand has far, far exceeded their expectations.
And, as you stated, not only are you 'always connected', you can also talk on the phone at the same time.
Hard to imagine living without it.
