Friday August 20, 12:59 am Eastern Time Company Press Release SOURCE: MRCGroup Americans Want George W. Bush to Answer Drug Questions; Republicans Willing to 'Look-the-Other-Way' Even if Bush Used Illegal Drugs LAS VEGAS, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Jim Medick, Managing Director of the MRCGroup, released the results of their overnight Vegas OpinionPoll regarding George W. Bush's answer-dodging on his possible use of illegal drugs. ''We wanted to put the question to Americans in an unbiased format. What we found was not only divisions between the two parties -- but a definite 'look-the- other-way' mentality among voters. We've become either callous or apathetic regarding politician-behavior. Maybe it's a lot of both,'' summarized Medick.
Forty-seven percent of the total respondents answered ''yes'' when asked, ''Do you think George W. Bush should answer questions regarding any possible illegal drug use?'' Medick concluded, ''While this group wanted answers -- 48% stated they would still 'consider voting for George W. Bush,' even if they found he had used illegal drugs such as cocaine. Now here's the interesting part, when the numbers are reviewed by party line -- 58% of the Democrats versus only 39% of the Republicans think Bush should tell the whole story. Moreover, only 35% of the Democrats would still consider voting for Bush if they knew he had used illegal drugs against 62% of the Republicans. What we have here is an incredible case of roll reversal. Now it's the Republicans who are willing to look the other way when it comes to possible illegal activity by one of their own -- You gotta love it!''
The national survey was conducted among registered voters using random digit dial methodology on August 19, 1999. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 5%. MRCGroup, located in Las Vegas, is Nevada's largest market research and public opinion polling firm |
