Joan, one of the things that I don't understand is why one would worry so much about the effect of clear- cutting old growth forests, but not the effect of clear- cutting old growth values. I think that culture is pretty resilient too, don't get me wrong, but a lot of the "values" controversies have to do with a concern about "social ecology", and the extent to which society can be thrown out of balance by the rapid alteration of settled institutions or disrespect for so many matters that are sacred to many.....
