WorldPort sails for Europe

BRIAN QUINTON

WorldPort Communications will close its U.S. operations to concentrate on its
Netherlands-based European voice and data network, company officials
announced today.

“After careful consideration, we have decided it is in the best interests of
everyone involved to reduce the size of WorldPort's U.S. operations,” President
and CEO Charles Grivner said in a statement. “Since its acquisition in June
1998, the core of the company's operations has been WorldPort's Netherlands
subsidiary.”

WorldPort provides core network services to ISPs, long-distance providers and
large corporate clients in North America and Europe over a land-based and
undersea network. Last June the carrier acquired EnerTel N.V., an alternative
public telecommunications operator in the Netherlands with a 20,000-kilometer
fiber network.

WorldPort has about 80 employees in its Atlanta headquarters office.
