Hello DaYooper,

Interesting and fun news ... but nothing new.

The big record companies are always trying to protect their ground. And so all the vendors have been working on various encryption schemes to "protect" the audio from being bootlegged. The problem is that audio or video must be decrypted to reach our ears or eyes.

Microsoft is one of the first big vendors to start realizing that although they'll claim they can encrypt audio to protect the artist (sure ... you mean protect the record companies) it just isn't going to be that easy.

I don't see this as a big deal for RNWK either way ... as long as Real doesn't waste a huge amount of resources trying to do the same thing. This whole area is a wild goose chase. Microsoft chose to do this, probably to try and grab more market share and dollars from people who believe that protection like this is actually possible.

Remember, I can always hook the "line-out" or "speakers-out" connection on my computer, to the "line-in" or "mic-input" on another computer and re-record anything. These vendors are fighting a losing battle as long as my ears are still required to hear the music! ;-)

But I *do* think it was funny that Microsoft got hacked so quickly ... it makes their encryption folks look kinda' silly! ;-)

(And SDMI? What a joke, and what a waste of time ... it will be hacked or bypassed also ...)

I'm heading out on a two week vacation to Alaska ... won't be on-line for a while ... I hope this market corrects in the upward direction!

Take care!
