Cabletron's Wire-Speed, Secure, Routed Solution Replaces Legacy Routers in Major Aerospace and Defense Customer

ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 20, 1999--
Aerojet Quickly and Securely Exchanges Confidential Information Using Cabletron's Routers
Cabletron Systems (NYSE:CS) today announced that Aerojet, a major aerospace and defense contractor, has replaced routers from Cisco Systems and Bay Networks with Cabletron's SmartSwitch Routers (SSRs). Aerojet, located on a 13,300-acre, security-controlled site in Sacramento, California, has deployed Cabletron's SSR 8600 and 2000 models to provide wire-speed throughput across its secure, VPN-enabled wide area network.
As Mark Levine, senior network analyst with Aerojet, explains, "The nature of our business requires strict confidentiality, and we routinely need to add or change security rules that pertain to how our remote partners access our network. With Cabletron's SSRs, we can now quickly and easily add or modify rules without affecting network performance whatsoever."
Levine found that he was able to increase the number of individual security rules four times over what he was previously able to accomplish. He also saw a 30 percent increase in network throughput with the SSR.
Wire-speed performance is a necessity at Aerojet. Bottlenecks from bandwidth-intensive CAD models - ranging in size from 100 to 200 Mb - were slowing Aerojet's network.
Cabletron's SSRs, however, have alleviated many of these bottlenecks, enabling Aerojet's engineers to more efficiently download and manipulate CAD models. According to Levine, "Files and models that used to take up to an hour to download are now accessible in 10 minutes."
Additionally, the command line interface (CLI) on Cabletron's SSR enables network managers to easily fine-tune access lists without having to rewrite desired rules every time. Levine also said he can use the SSRs 'ACL Edit' command to quickly change rules on-the-fly.
Cabletron's SSR Family continues to receive recognition for its industry-leading functionality and standards-based interoperability. InternetWeek Magazine selected the SSR 8600 "Best of Breed" in May 1999. The SSR 8600 was named "Product of the Year" by Network Magazine in its May 1999 issue. The SSR 8000 received Data Communication's "Hot Product - Backbone Switch" award in January 1999, while the SSR Family was chosen "Product of the Year" in the Network Equipment Router category by CTI Magazine in December 1998.
