Latin America 2Q Computer Sales Up 19% On Yr -
Dataquest

SAO PAULO -- Sales of personal computers in Latin America rose 19% during the second
quarter, led by a 68% jump in Mexican PC sales, according to a report issued Friday by market
research firm Dataquest Inc., a unit of the Gartner Group Inc.

Dataquest attributed the increase to cheaper average prices of computers.

Brazil led by unit sales in the region, with shipments surpassing 305,000 units, a 4% growth over
the second quarter of 1998. Mexico came in second, with shipments of more than 290,000 units.
Argentina followed with shipments approaching 100,000 units, a 5% increase over the same period
last year.

Dataquest Inc. is a unit of Gartner Group (IT).

(In an item timed about 1403 GMT (10:03 a.m. EDT Friday), Dataquest was incorrectly identified
as a unit of the Garner Group.)

Dataquest said that Compaq Computers Inc. (CPQ) lead in market share, with 23.6%, followed
by International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) in a distant second place with 8.7%.

Compaq's share of Latin American PC sales jumped from 19.2% in the same period last year,
while IBM's percentage shrank from 10.1%.

"Driven by an aggressive price and services strategy, Compaq dramatically increased sales in the
region, as its market share was 15 points higher than the No. 2 vendor," said Luis Anavitarte,
Dataquest's senior industry analyst for Latin America.

Acer Computer Corp. (P.ACI) came in third place, with a 6.8% share, down from 7.4% in the
same quarter last year, followed by Hewlett Packard Corp. (HWP), with 4.8%, down from 7.0%,
and Dell, which rose to 3.7% from 2.1% in the second quarter of 1998.

Other manufacturers accounted for 52.3% of the market, a decrease from last year's 54.2%
