TCI Cable modems

I know someone who just put in a modem cable modem in Fremont, CA (just north of San Jose). I think that's TCI. Quite a promotion, free installation of the modem, etc. to get people to bite. He had it taken out after a week. Seems it was about as fast as a 14k modem at best, when it worked. Apparently this is a wide-spread problem. Bad engineering and bad marketing to push a system not yet functional. If this is something IFCI did, that's bad for IFCI. If this is a symptom of what IFCI has been hired to fix, it's good.

Apparently the reliability of cable in general is a problem so far. My brother in Salt Lake kept his cable modem, but indicates that it is off line a lot. Maybe cable companies should have a back-up phone access for their subscribers until they get their systems humming.
