JP, In the case of splitting aces, it depends on the count. If you have a ten rich shoe, you split those suckers. On the second question, you don't make decisions on just one of your cards, as you are allowed to look at the other one, too. It is the dealer's hole card you can't look at. Well, you can, but then two guys named Vito and Carmine take you for a drive in the desert. And they don't offer your corpse a ride back. <g>
