I personally doubt that anyone would take over CDN, since they're just too big. I don't think CDN has any significant gaps in their products, they're just falling behind some and need to improve what they've got. They definitely seem to have all the pieces of a complete EDA flow, and really need to put work into making all the pieces that have been aquired work together better. In some spots they're weak and I could see them buying out some startups with better technology.
If Avant! hadn't grown so big through aquisition itself, I could've seen CDN buying them as part of a settlement of their ongoing lawsuit ala Intel v. DEC. This would end those troubles and bring some good technology into cadence. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to be in the cards. I guess they could always sell off the pieces that duplicate their own tools, but it gets to be an expensive proposition.

Anyway, I got in a hair under $10 last week and so far this is proving to be a comfortable ride.
