I agree. Alpha sales are not (in my guestimate) a big chunk of MSFT revenues. The main thing with Alpha was bragging rights... "We support multiple architectures"... "We have a high-performance scalable solution". And of course with SGI the bragging right was "We can push 30 gadzillion graphic polygons per second"

Those braggin rights are now going to other platforms, and it is unclear whether Merced (or is that McKinley?) will be able to fill that void in time.

The talking point is... if you have any doubts about AMDs financial viability, then the poker game now changes between Intel and MSFT. INTC is holding all the cards. Intel can run several viable OS platforms, but MSFT can only run on... Intel.

MSFT has a strategic interest in seeing the x86 clone market thrive. Will they try to exert any influence on this?
