Robert - Re: " HP rebuts reports it will skip Merced in favor of McKinley"

That story is about as clear as mud.

Re: "Kroeker also briefly described the PA-RISC roadmap. This year, the PA-8500 will top out at 440 MHz and be replaced by the PA-8600, running at 500 to 550 MHz. Next year, just after the Merced's release, the PA-8700 will be introduced at about 700 MHz, followed by the PA-8800 in 2001, about the time the McKinley ships. While the PA-8800 should be released at about 900 MHz, the PA-8900 will break the 1-GHz barrier, reaching 1.2 GHz in 2002 or beyond, Kroeker said. "

I guess Intel will make money either way - since the HP RoadMap is all based on performance of PA-RISC chips designed for - and manufactured by - Intel wafer fabs.

Looks like a win-win from that standpoint.
