Don't talk to him until Thanksgiving?????? Are you insane???? Just kidding. Well, sort of. He and I are used to talking frequently by ICQ (chat) even living in the same house. I probably won't even realize he's not here most of the time, until I call him in to dinner, and he says-- uhh mommm--. Rice has their Parents' Weekend in late September, which seems fast to me. When I started college, you weren't allowed to go home or see your parents for six weeks. I cried a lot the first week or two, but mostly because I missed my boyfriend. There were a lot of us sitting around the dorm on Saturday nights playing bridge and moaning. Then we gradually began to realize we were missing a lot of good stuff, and our Sat. Night Widows' Club began to diminish in size. Finally we all decided to go to a mixer together--that wouldn't be cheating, we told ourselves-- and I met a guy who could really dance, and we had a fantastic time, the only time in my life I literally danced holes in my shoes. It turned out he was a singer and had a friend who sang, so we all got together and formed the Terrytowne Singers, a folk group, embarrassingly similar to Peter, Paul and Mary, but we earned all our spending money singing our way through four years of school and had an incredible time. You just never know what's waiting around the corner. Guess how many times the boys have heard this story.
I am in favor of your boys reading anything (reasonable) they want. THey'll read "good" stuff in school. I think a lot of "good" stuff is introduced too early, and is often nothing but a boring chore. Let them enjoy their free reading time. GO ahead though and buy different types of books for them, or causally make suggestions, but don;t insist on their reading these books, or even ask about them. ANd I really do recommend reading aloud at night instead of TV. OH--- we always took the boys with us to the Half Price book store and let them browse. SHow them sections they might be interested in (ammo gravitates now to the theatre section and horror section,, CW to the SciFi) and let them buy any book they want-- (reasonable) and don't question their choice. I think reading can be a bit like toilet training. If they think you're worrying about it, they use it as a weapon. |
