The allegorical references are frightening. I can't shake this horrible image of the good Captain Ahab, alive but entangled in lines upon Leviathan's back, making a last symbolic thrust of his lance, all the while the all-knowing, malevolent eye of the great Beast watches. Then all--mortals, ship, longboats and Whale--sink below the waves.
