Foundry Preps Gigabit Ethernet Over Copper By Todd Spangler, Inter@ctive Week August 20, 1999 10:16 AM ET zdnet.com In what it is billing as "gigabit-speed networking for the masses," Foundry Networks next week will announce its plans for a family of copper Gigabit Ethernet gear due to ship in mid-October. Foundry is the first networking vendor to announce Gigabit Ethernet products that run over ordinary network cabling. One of the prime advantages of the new technology are that networks in most cases will be able to use their existing wiring, whereas previous Gigabit Ethernet systems have required running expensive fiber cabling. Another benefit is lower cost: Foundry's Gigabit-Ethernet-over-copper systems, based on the IEEE 802.3ab spec for Category 5 cabling, will cost about $650 per port, which is less than half of the fiber-based Gigabit Ethernet products. "The first application you'll see [Gigabit Ethernet over copper] in is in server farms and workgroups where people are moving around tremendous amounts of data," said Marshall Eisenberg, director of product marketing at Foundry. The new Gigabit-Ethernet-over-copper products - slated to ship Oct. 15 - will be offered in Foundry's FastIron II family of edge switches in a variety of configurations. On the high end, the FastIron II Plus GC chassis switch will be able to handle up to 64 ports of Gigabit Ethernet with a backplane that can deliver 96 million packets per second, according to Foundry. Other models will provide a mix of Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet ports. Foundry also will announce one- and two-port copper Gigabit Ethernet modules for its other switch families.
