In each case of discussing the hypothetical there is a different reason, obviously. One sees, learns, interesting things, even about one's own basic preconceptions. Hypotheticals are useful in pruning away all but a simple, basic issue, quite often, and seeing where oneself, and others, fall out on that isolated issue. It did that for me, in this case, in a way, at least.
It would be hard to think of a more extreme or pathetic case than this one, though, that's true. |
