ALL fuel cells use hydrogen exclusively to generate electricity. A hydrogen atom consists of a proton and an electron. In a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell, the proton passes through the membrane to unite with oxygen while the electron follows a circuit around the membrane. This produces electricity.

A reformer, a miniature refinery that strips carbon, sulfur, nitrogen, etc. away from petroleum or natural gas products, can be added to a fuel cell. This combination will result in a fuel cell vehicle that runs on gas, diesel, NG, etc. but the stripped elements must be disposed of.

A variation of the PEM fuel cell takes in a mixture of methanol (CH4)and water (as a transport medium) and strips the hydrogen away from the carbon. Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFCs)have had a tendency to "poison" the membrane with carbon but recent research looks promising.

Honda has closed the book on battery-powered electrics to develop fuel cell vehicles.
