Richard,
I'm a proponent of pure hydrogen. The stumbling block at the moment is storage. No one is really comfortable with pressurized tanks. There have been signifiicant breakthroughs in metal hydride storage, where the hydrogen bonds with a sandy substance and is safe in an accident, but hydrides are still too heavy. The most exciting development is carbon nanotube and carbon fiber storage. There is intense international research in this arena. If we are successful, hydrogen will quickly begin to replace other fuels because it is inherently safe to store in a vehicle, will not flame in an accident, and promises between 2000 and 5000 miles per fill-up.

That was not a misprint. Admiral Richard Truly, Director of the U.S. Renewable Energy Laboratory addresses the promise of carbon nanotube storage and the latest research from Singapore can be found here:

Honda is presently negotiating with Prof. Craig Jensen of the University of Hawaii, who was awarded the honor of becoming the "1999 Research Success Story" by the Hydrogen Technical Advisory Panel, which was created by the Department of Energy to advise congress on hydrogen policy. I attended this meeting. More information can be found here:
