Unfortunately, I have read of these sorts of accusations, but have never felt them to be adequately documented. I do not think I had heard the one about out and out tantrums, though. I do not doubt that he has been somewhat vindictive, but it is almost impossible to succeed in politics unless you reward your friends and hurt your enemies, and so I do not know if he has been as overboard as has been alleged. I agree that with a broad- based prosperity it would be absurd to take too much credit, but if he has reversed trends for businesses to leave, or declining tourist revenues, he might reasonably take some credit. I have said elsewhere something about the securities business, but I would be curious to know, if you can point me in the right direction, about his conviction rate in that area. My impression is that Guiliani has made the city safer, more habitable, and has improved the quality of city services. As a regular visitor, mainly to Manhattan, over the last 20 years, with some sporadic visits even earlier, the city looks better than ever to me... |
