Dell reworks Gigabuys Dell will add Gigageeks to answer product questions and makes plans for special boutiques. By Margaret Kane, ZDNN August 20, 1999 11:50 AM PT
Dell Computer Inc., is revamping its online computer accessories store, adding advice features to help consumers learn about technology. Officials for Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) said the company has plans to continue expanding the Gigabuy store, adding other technology categories outside the PC market.
The Gigageeks service will be available to answer e-mail regarding product selection and technical advice. Other features include an automated product recommendation engine that suggests add-ons like memory and printer cartridges, based on the product consumers already own.
Dell said it would also be adding special Boutiques to the Gigabuys store, focusing on particular product segments, such as digital imaging and home networking.
Dell launched the Gigabuys store in March, selling software, accessories, and peripherals. The company later announced plans to work with online retailer Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) to drive traffic between Dell's store and Amazon's site.
"We definitely want to be one stop shop for customers technology needs, so we'll expand product categories over time," said Dave Hood, vice president and general manager of Web business division. "We'll probably never get to the point where we're selling groceries online but consumer electronics are one of the things we'll be moving into down the road."
Hood didn't say when the expansions would come, but did say that the company planned to revamp the site every 30 to 60 days. |
