Yes, when Merced was promised in 1997 it was going to dramatically change the Enterprise Computing Landscape and in fact it changed -- *nothing* -- doesnt even exist today. It's now a test tool for ISV's for the upcoming McKinley chip in when 2001? Well using the Merced timeline maybe we can expect it in 2004 realistically, in 5 years Sun developed 167 Mhz Ultrasparc I to Ultrasparc II and will have Ultrasparc III before even Merced becomes available - so by 2004 who knows what will be available from any of the RISC vendors - Compaq would be wise to contine development on Alpha because Intel wont have a competitive chip for years.
