Glenn, I see your the second one up this morning. An excerpt from todays Seattle times. >>Yet another instance of the lack of analyst independence raised its blemished face last week. A bank analyst at Bear Stearns apparently was muzzled because he turned negative on a client, First Union, which may or may not have yanked business away from Bear Stearns, according to The Wall Street Journal. Analysts are human beings, too. The vast majority are decent, honest individuals hoping to help investors make good selections. OH YEAH!!! NAME ME ONE???? But analysts sometimes are pressured to push stocks that their brokerages are working for. How often do we see analysts issuing highly positive comments about a company their brokerage just brought public? How do we know that a brokerage may have a heavy position in a stock an analyst suddenly recommends? Stock Talk, a feature of this Sunday section that offers analysts' opinions on Washington stocks, has gone from an almost unnoticed state in the late 1980s to a highly popular segment now. But readers should view the comments more as ideas and less as absolute must-own recommendations. When a stock piques an investor's interest, the investor should launch a full-scale campaign to make certain the stock fits in his or her portfolio. Doing a little research won't avoid all mistakes, but it can't hurt. Meanwhile, investors doing business with Bear Stearns' research department can hoist their level of skepticism a little higher<<
