Gene - I think the first story would make a classic study of how tough it is to set standards, and co-ordinate large software systems. This is a big part of the reason why Windows succeeds so well: it is much easier for one company to unilaterally create a standard, as MSFT did. DOJ would never understand this. This is why so many companies IBM buys disappear, never to be heard of again; it is tough to integrate diverse software suites together.

The linux note was interesting, too.

I can't see the market spiking just on this news, because it is too esoteric. But, I would think for us it affirms MSFT's dominant position going forth.

BTW, Wired has a short blurb claiming someone has an easy to set-up, easy to use linux package. It would be interesting to see this, but I doubt it matters, really. I think, though, Wired is the best financial magazine around, at least for a silicon investor like me. Very interesting Nokia story, too.

Regards,
Tom
