"Its worth pointing out that with most brokers the order shows up on Level II under the name of a market maker. In fact there usually is not any way to tell if an order is from the market maker himself or an order from the public."

That's why, when I sometimes use an online broker, I'll make my order for 900 or 1100 shares (instead of 1000). That helps me identify my order when it shows up on Level II as, say, a bid by NITE.
