H2 Safety Concerns

There are significant safety concerns in refueling hydrogen-powered vehicles because hydrogen in the air can ignite at as little as four percent concentration. A saving grace for hydrogen is its immediate upward path when leaked, unlike for instance propane which "pools" in depressions and flows downhill.

In a refueling station, it is probably best if the people stay inside the car and the vehicle is fueled by professionals or even robots, as is being done at Munich Airport's new gaseous and liquid hydrogen station.

Insofar as accidents and ruptures, hydrogen in nanotube and carbon fiber storage is safer than any other fuel. It is my understanding that only burning gasoline from the other vehicle could raise the temperature enough to release a significant amount of hydrogen, even if the carbon nanotube/carbonfiber hydrogen storage tank has ruptured.

If you have heard otherwise concerning carbon storage, I can furnish sources for the latest research that indicate this. It is possible to crate carbon storage with less than ideal characteristics - and you may have heard some reports - however these processes will not be chosen for applications.
