We live in Chantilly, in Fairfax County, way out by the Loudoun line.
Trying desperately to find a house in the Woodson High School district before school starts (which would be about 13 miles further east, or north, or whatever it is, closer to D.C., and my husband's job in Crystal City). My older son will be starting high school, if he starts at Woodson he can take computer programming and crew. If he starts at Chantilly, and then we find a house we like in the Woodson district, I don't think they'll let him change the courses he started with. So I and every other yuppie mom in Fairfax, it seems, am struggling for the right house. Slim pickings. Found one that needs a new roof, negotiating for it now, and wondering if I'm nuts.
Interesting that you like ice storms. They are really pretty if you don't have to go anywhere.
Why do you miss the restaurants on Wilson? I am assuming you mean the ones in Clarendon? The ones I've been into are good, but I would have thought you'd have just as good in California. Unless you mean Roratonga Rodeo and Bardo, I don't think they can be duplicated. Not that I've ever been in either, but I do read the City Paper from time to time.
I think wine tastings sound like fun. I was just thinking recently about how you California people know so much about wine, and wondering if it was a California thing or what. We like California zinfandel, cabernet sauvignon, and sometimes merlot, but our selection is pretty hit or miss. We live close to a discount place now, Total Beverage, I am starting to think that they don't cellar the wine properly or something. We had a decent cheap wine at a couple of places on vacation, Glen Ellen Cabernet Sauvignon, 1996, and wanted to try it here, but all they had at Total Beverage was 1997, which didn't taste very good. Couldn't tell if it were just because it was a different year, but it seemed like it wasn't very fresh tasting.
And I used to lurk on the Wine thread, and was intimidated, especially by the people using the fancy glasses. |
