Compaq, Others Unveil PC Theater Initiative HOUSTON - Compaq Computer and Intel unveiled an initiative to establish standards for a new category of computers for the home called the PC Theater. Compaq and Intel said they are working with other leaders in consumer electronics and computing, including Thomson Consumer Electronics, Hitachi, Mitsubishi Electric, NEC Technologies and Toshiba. The focus of the initiative is to create a new category of home entertainment products that are compatible. PC Theater is a new category of consumer entertainment devices that merge computing and traditional forms of media and entertainment content on large-screen displays. PC Theater products will feature TV viewing capability, surround sound audio, DVD (digital video disk) movies, wireless keyboards, mice and Web browsing. The purpose of the initiative is to help ensure that consumers can have flexibility and choice. Compaq said these open standards it is proposing will allow large displays to connect with computers to deliver better picture quality and seamless integration with PC control devices.
