I would guess that nine-tenths of the soldiers who have died in war were coerced by draft, threats, or force. There is no rational reason for a soldier to engage in risky actions except fear of a worse alternative. Consider how Clinton and G W Bush were willing to risk their political futures to avoid combat service. Did ambition or patriotism send Al Gore to Viet Nam? Veterans tend to glorify or exaggerate their reasons for joining up. I was drafted.
