G, I appreciate the kind words and have addressed your socks-missing-in-the-dryer query. Below are the links for Maytag's most innovative Washer and Dryer combo. The Neptune Washer and Dryer have more computing power than most corporate PCs. Moreover, they include an unspecified product attribute (the Maytag general counsel was unwilling to expose the firm to the potential liabilities appertaining to such a claim): Sock Saver Plus -- which virtually eliminates the aforementioned "lost sock problem." With Sock Saver Plus, the individual socks are barcoded and scanned in the pre-wash stage of the washing vessel. This electronic tag is passed via a fiberchannel link between the washer and dryer to ensure prompt assessment and recovery during the ever critical washer to dryer transfer (the software is actually an innovative Lotus Notes application). This technique reduces the In-Vessel Lost Sock Occurrrence (IVLSO) to almost zero (well beyond five standard deviations). Recently, there have been studies indicating that Spontaneous Sock Combustion (SSC) is on the rise, as sock manufacturers employ more exotic materials to improve sock performance. The new Sock Saver Plus system also downloads this critical (albeit baffling) data to a central Maytag DataWarehouse that is co-sponsored by the manufacturer and The William Gates Charitable Foundation (This is not to be confused with the Amazon.com fledgling effort in this space: Amazon.sox ... apparently Bezos believes he can leverage his infrastructure here also). This DataWarehouse is then open to qualified researchers around the globe who are working 24/7 to better understand SSC. Thus, the Sock Saver Plus system should go a long way in helping resolve the mystery of SSC. One caveat about buying the current generation of the Neptune Washer/Dryer. The next generation plans to incorporate robotics to automate the critical washer to dryer transfer. The system is said (well-placed sources) to integrate PRIA's intrabay handling technology and robotics. The Promis software for this application is still getting the bugs worked out ... but, I have heard that shipments are targeted to begin concurrent to the Windows 2000 and/or the Merced introduction.
