SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug 23, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

Intelligent Data Analysis and Automatic Event Generation
Enhances Proactive End-to-End Network Management

3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS) today announced Transcend(R)
Traffix(TM) Manager V3.0 for Windows NT, the latest version of its
award-winning RMON-2 based application for mapping enterprise network
traffic. In this new release, Transcend Traffix Manager V3.0 offers an
intelligent data analysis function combined with a powerful event
manager, allowing administrators to quickly and more proactively
identify network trouble spots and monitor corporate usagepolicies. The
new release is compatible with a variety of 3Com(R) and non-3Com
equipment, and has undergone testing for integration of RMON-2 data
from Hewlett-Packard's high speed LAN and WAN monitoring devices.

Transcend Traffix Manager provides a global view of end-to-end network
traffic flow patterns to help administrators tune the network and
maintain the highest levels of availability. New in version 3.0 is an
intelligent rules-based data analysis system that automatically
examines network data for inconsistencies and proactively alerts the
administrators if irregularities occur in activity or network resource
usage. A graphical display in Transcend Traffix Manager provides a full
description of network events, including level of severity, time of
occurrence and source of the event. Transcend Traffix Manager V3.0 can
also automatically forward alerts to an open management platform for
event integration.

Transcend Traffix Manager V3.0 employs a standards-based client/server
architecture allowing users to connect to the Traffix server from
virtually anywhere on the network, saving management time and providing
more flexibility in network traffic monitoring. Java-based clients can
be local or remote, running Windows, Windows NT or UNIX. The Windows
NT-based Transcend Traffix Manager server has been optimized for
multi-processor operation for enhanced performance.

"With Transcend Traffix Manager's round-the-clock intelligent analysis
of network traffic patterns and powerful event system, managers can
maintain and operate business-critical network resources such as
e-commerce and Internet servers with proactive notification that these
resources need attention," said Kathy Rocha, vice president and general
manager of 3Com's Network Management Division. "Withthe new
client/server architecture in Traffix Manager V3.0, they can access
this critical information from anyplace on their network."

Mobile User Management, Security and Scalability Enhancements

Transcend Traffix Manager V3.0 improves the tracking of mobile users
through Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) recognition. The
application sorts through DHCP assignments to ensure that users are
discretely identified even if they share a common pool of DHCP-assigned
IP addresses. In addition, the ability of Transcend Traffix Manager to
detect attacks strongly enhances network security. Through the
implementation of a rules-based system and theevent subsystem, Traffix
network management software alerts administrators of IP-based "sweep
attacks" or the presence of unauthorized FTP or Web servers newly
introduced into the network.

Additionally, automatic DNS aggregation increases Traffix Manager
scalability by gathering multiple servers from different organizations
and monitoring them as a single location. Simplicity and out-of-the-box
operation is enhanced through 'wizards' for automatic RMON-2 agent
discovery and database set-up.

Comprehensive Data Collection

Transcend Traffix Manager provides compatibility with the industry's
most comprehensive set of RMON-2 data sources to map network traffic.
This release of Traffix network management software has been tested for
compatibility with the HP OpenView NetMetrix WAN probes and HP OpenView
NetMetrix ATM probes. For more information on HP OpenView NetMetrix
probes, visit tmo.hp.com.

"3Com sought out HP NetMetrix, the industry's leading provider of
probes and instrumentation, to compliment its own traditional media
offerings," Anita Manwani, general manager of Hewlett-Packard's
NetMetrix division. "HP offers the broadest range of media-specific,
high-performance probes in the industry, allowing users to not only see
the traffic across the network, but also the quality of service
provided by the carrier. 3Com is another network vendor who istaking
advantage of the power of our solutions."

In addition to collecting information from dedicated probes, Transcend
Traffix Manager V3.0 collects data from 3Com's DynamicAccess(R) edge
monitor and from 3Com embedded device agents. DynamicAccess technology
runs on top of client or server network interface cards and provides
RMON-2 data through its Network Performance Manager, a cost-effective
instrumentation strategy for switched environments. In addition, 3Com's
CoreBuilder(R) 3500 and 9000 switches incorporate embedded RMON-2
agents.

Price and Availability

Transcend Traffix Manager V3.0 for Windows NT is scheduled to ship in
mid-September and will be priced at $9,995.
