Sun Microsystems Fibre Channel Storage Products Selected by Time Inc. for Key IT Needs
Publishing Company Standardizes on Sun StorEdge A5200 Arrays Backed by Sun StorEdge L11000 Tape Library and Sun StorEdge Enterprise NetBackup Software
PALO ALTO, Calif., Aug. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW - news) announced today that Time Inc. chose the Sun StorEdge(TM) A5200 fibre channel disk array for its mission-critical client server systems based at Time Inc.'s New York headquarters. For centralized backup, Time Inc. selected the Sun StorEdge L11000 Tape Library and Sun StorEdge Enterprise NetBackup(TM) software. Reliability, scalability and satisfactory experiences with Sun were key factors in Time Inc.'s decision.

The Sun StorEdge family of products provides a complete storage solution for Time Inc. The Sun StorEdge A5200 array furnishes the company with high availability, performance and drive density at an attractive cost per megabyte. Because Sun's StorEdge architecture is modular, Time Inc. is employing the arrays for systems scaling from less than 50 GB to 200 GB, storing a total of almost 8 TB of data.

``Sun StorEdge modular arrays allow customers to achieve maximum performance by matching the right storage solution to the customer's application. The end result is a pay as you grow environment that scales and meets our customers needs,' said Jeff Allen, vice president of marketing, Sun Microsystems Network Storage. ``The days of the one-size-fits-all monolithic box approach are over. Our commitment to open standards and modularity means our customers will continue to have the maximum number of options as their networks grow and change.'

In planning for future Storage Area Network (SAN) connections, Sun StorEdge A5200's advanced fibre channel technology was a key consideration. Dual fibre channel-arbitrated loops connect host to drive with 100 MB/second performance. With high performance and increased bandwidth, the array affords the advanced fibre channel backbone central to providing data services in the storage network.

System Backup

Backup for Time Inc.'s mission-critical IT systems will be provided by the Sun StorEdge L11000 tape library. The Sun StorEdge L11000 is Sun's highest capacity, highest availability tape library designed to support the most demanding backup and recovery needs of enterprise customers. The library offers over 11 TB of native capacity in the highly reliable Digital Linear Tape (DLT) 7000 format. This is an ideal IT solution for massive file systems, such as Time Inc.'s, that include large databases, data warehouses, enterprise servers and data centers. The backup strategy is to centralize and manage from New York.

Time Inc.'s Storage Needs

``You can deal with some outages if you're doing simple downloading and reporting,' said Doug Spitz, director of application services for Time Inc. ``But once you get into mission-critical systems, reliability and performance are essential. The Sun StorEdge A5200 and L11000 gave us that confidence. Additionally, the ability to scale upwards and retain performance was critical.'

Sun StorEdge products will support a diverse set of key applications critical for the publishing company. All of Time Inc.'s major weekly and monthly magazine titles, from Sports Illustrated to Time and Life magazines, access publishing instructions from Time Inc.'s networked infrastructure for printing and binding at 15 printing plants across the United States. Time Inc. centralized the purchase of paper for the magazines several years ago. Using a client-server architecture to manage inventory and purchases from New York, the company reaps considerable savings by optimizing the use of paper and keeping inventories at a minimum.

All the financial systems, including payables, general ledger, purchasing and consolidations are being rolled out across the enterprise to run from a central site in New York using the PeopleSoft suite of software. The rollout is expected to be complete within the next couple of years. The Human Resources and Payroll systems are currently in production and were the first applications installed for Time Inc. The New York headquarters of Time Inc. is responsible for paying 11,000 domestic employees.

The analysis, sales reporting and marketing strategy for Time Inc.'s advertising sales are warehoused on the Sun StorEdge A5200 array. Fast and reliable access to this stored data is critical for strategies and tactics to keep Time Inc.'s advertising business running smoothly.

Time Inc. is also converting to the Sun StorEdge A5200 array for its New Media Web site. The site receives 20 to 25 million-page views a week. The scalability of the storage solution will eventually allow Time Inc. to expand the system quickly to meet unforeseen workloads.

From Mainframe to Open Systems

In 1993, when Time Inc.'s IT department recognized the need to re-architect its IT environment, Time Inc. began migrating from a traditional mainframe shop to a client-server architecture, incorporating Sun's network computing products. Building on Sun Enterprise(TM) servers, the Solaris(TM) Operating Environment, and now the Sun StorEdge A5200 and L11000 arrays, Time Inc.'s staff designed a finely tuned IT infrastructure that provided higher flexibility, better performance and reduced Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
