Prohibition doesn't work. It only makes convicts out of victims, and creates millions of hypocrites, some of whom later run for high office. A fair argument can be made that alcohol is as bad as cocaine and worse than marijuana; cigarettes are bad in a different way. As we're not banning alcohol and cigarettes (and shouldn't) it seems strange that we insist on going down this prohibition road that's a time-tested failure. Why is cocaine use really turning out not to be such a big deal in electoral politics? Because it's so common. Even bluebloods such as GWB and Lincoln Chafee have used it. And the criminalization system is unfair as poor crackheads get arrested, while genteel prep school snorters get nominated for high position (at least poor alcoholics don't get imprisoned until they kill someone during a DWI). The guiding principle is: "Justice, justice, thou shalt pursue." The current system is unjust.
