FORD! FORD! FORD!
OK everybody, please help me out. Was it the April conference call (or was it the July call?) that Randy "casually" mentioned something about Ford?? And he mentioned another couple of couple of companies and then said something about how a "reasonable" investor might draw some "reasonable" conclusions from that information - does anyone remember that?? (I can no longer find a transcript of the April call or I would have quoted exactly what he said.)

Well, I think a "reasonable" investor has just found a "reasonable" link between Ford and Identix. Forbes Magazine, September 6, 1999, has a little article on page 285 titled, "Cars without keys" and it talks about how keys are changing for cars - it says in part -

"Word is that Ford is testing fingerprint-recognition technology to replace the common key.......When Ford perfects the new system it's working on your index finger will be your car key. Fingerprint technology has finally been reduced to a $50 microchip that can fit easily on a steering column - or perhaps even on the back of a door handle. Short of lopping off your digits, a crook would be confounded by the lock.

"The advantages to this system go beyond security. The car can be programmed to function differently for each recognized fingerprint. You might program your car so that your 6-year-old's fingerprint could unlock it but not start it."

I could not find this article on the forbes website so you'll have to go out and buy the magazine (but I gave you most of the good stuff.)

Rick

ps. David, good find on the VRSN post.
