HP Issues Statement On IA-64 Position

High Tech Writers

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 23, 1999-- Hewlett-Packard Company today issued the following statement on its IA-64 position. This statement corrects CNET's Aug. 19 report that inaccurately characterized HP's position relative to the IA-64 architecture roadmap and the Merced processor.

In April, HP launched the N-Class servers, which are based on HP's PA-RISC(1) platform. At that time, HP said that the likely upgrade path for N-Class customers to IA-64 would be McKinley, the second generation of IA-64 chips. HP stated again this week that McKinley would be the likely upgrade path for N-Class customers and that only N-Class customers should bypass Merced. McKinley is the chip that will be available when the roadmap for N-Class customers calls for an upgrade to IA-64, typically every two to three years. HP is not recommending that customers on other platforms bypass Merced.

HP and Intel co-developed the IA-64 architecture upon which the Merced and McKinley chips are based. HP remains firmly committed to deploying the Merced processor in its computer systems. As HP stated in its Aug. 16 press release, in the mid-2000 timeframe, HP will deliver Merced-based workstations and servers that support HP-UX(2), NT-64 and Linux. HP also expects Intel to meet or exceed its stated goals for Merced. HP's roadmap from PA-RISC to IA-64 has remained unchanged.

HP is committed to offering its customers the most application and operating-system choices in the industry. As the sole co-developer of IA-64 with Intel, HP has taken the leadership position in ensuring broad adoption of the architecture and has made significant progress in preparing customers for the transition to IA-64. IA-64 is HP's strategic platform for the future.
