Well, I'm certainly not a fan of Gary North, but if you really believe that you might be having to eat out of your stockpile for weeks or months, then taking Vitamin C might be a good idea.

I don't know about colds, but vitamin C deficiency can certainly result in scurvy, a disease of the mouth and gums.
