Can I jump in on the legalization question? My understanding is that binge drinking increased during prohibition as did deaths from bad bathtub gin.

To legalize cocaine and heroin may open a can of worms, it would have to be carefully thought through. Maybe they could administer it the same way methadone is now, I don't know.

In the case of marijuana we're dealing with a weed that grows in all 50 states and most folks agree it is a rather innocuous drug, less harmful than alcohol. The fact that its easy to grow makes it unnecessary to import it. Thus the "War on Drugs" becomes an internal war, waged against American citizens. This "war" has rendered moot the 4th amendment. I can't find my handy copy of the constitution right now, but it is (was) the 4th amendment which guaranteed us protection from illegal searches and seizures and protected the privacy of our papers. I think we can agree that one is blown out of the water.

Which is the greater threat to our freedom, some citizens puffing a little weed or these pernicious asset forfeiture laws?
