Optical Solutions' FiberPath Chosen for Utah's First Full-Service Fiber-To-The-Home Installations All West to Bring Superior Voice, Video, and High-Speed Data Capabilities

August 24, 1999

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 23 /PRNewswire/ via NewsEdge
Corporation -- Optical Solutions, Inc. designer and manufacturer
of the only true Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) communications
solution, FiberPath(TM), today announced that All West
Communications, an independent local exchange carrier based
in Kamas, Utah, had selected Optical Solutions' technology to
bring integrated voice, video, and high-speed data connections
directly to homes in three residential developments located east
of Salt Lake City. Currently, more than 200 homes are eligible
for the service. A fourth development, in the planning stages,
could bring the total number of eligible residences to 1,000.

Mr. Vernile Prince, President of All West Communications, said
that his company had selected FiberPath over two other
technologies, stating, "We found that Optical Solutions'
technology provided us with the most comprehensive and
cost-effective means of meeting our requirements. We wanted
to ensure that our investment would be a long-term one -- not
obsolete after a few years. We wanted to provide our
subscribers with the greatest bandwidth and scalability, and
keep our maintenance charges and costs of doing business in
line. FiberPath was the best fit."

Mr. Asim Saber, Optical Solutions' President and Chief
Executive Officer, said: "We are pleased to have been chosen
to partner with All West in bringing the first true
Fiber-To-The-Home network to subscribers in Utah. We look
forward to continuing to create greater value for All West
Communications with our scalable, versatile products to help
future-proof their network." Mr. Saber continued, "Its
plug-and-play design makes FiberPath easy to install -- and
even easier to service. The system's Passive Optical Network
virtually eliminates costly service calls. Provisioning of services
and trouble-shooting takes place in real time at the central
office at the touch of a few keystrokes. In addition, fiber-optic
cable has a lifespan approximately double that of the copper
coaxial cables typically used to bring voice, video, and data
services to the home, thus offering the greatest opportunity for
investment return."

Earlier this year, Optical Solutions had announced
commitments from Rye Telephone Company of Colorado City,
Colo., and Futureway Communications, Inc., of Toronto,
Ontario, in excess of 24,000 installations.

FiberPath benefits both homeowners and telecommunications
service providers FiberPath makes it possible for selected All
West residential subscribers to enjoy the same clarity of sound
and uninterrupted Internet connectivity at home as they do at
the office. Video images attain unparalleled definition and
vibrancy. With Optical Solutions' patented FiberPath
technology, up to six lines can be introduced directly into the
home via a low-profile Network Interface Device (NID), or
patented UDP(TM) remote terminal unit, that can also house
cable TV and utilities metering connections.

FiberPath enables service providers to supply the
ever-increasing bandwidth that more and more customers are
demanding, while at the same time future proofing their
infrastructures and systems. FiberPath technology is
compatible with existing provider services, and can transport
data both upstream and downstream to accommodate current
and future communications needs.

On the leading edge, Optical Solutions, Inc., Minneapolis,
Minn., designs, manufactures, and markets state-of-the-art
patented FiberPath, Fiber-To-The-Home and
Fiber-near-The-Home solutions providing voice, video, and
high-speed data to customers worldwide. Optical Solutions,
Inc., is privately held. Its management, technical, and
operations group has nearly 500 years of collective industry
experience. Additional news and information can be found on
